Honestly,…the reasons I had for going natural,[A process that took about a year and currently being fully natural for about 6 months now] I no longer have. So I am in a limbo. I currently am wearing a weave. I left my hair in its natural state for about 3 in a half month without any weaves. It was ummm. rough. Being in school I honestly didn’t care to cowash my hair everyy night or do a style that takes like 2 hours every night. I had much bigger fish to fry. So basically my hair was constantly in a wash and go state. Because I not only have natural hair but stereotypical African thick nappy hair it would continually just have this coarse look no matter how much moisture I put in. It would look conditioned for maybe a day or 2…
But One thing that was great about the 3 in a half months was I think it helped me to stop caring so much what people thought of me. Rough or not I felt beautiful and happy with who I was as a person. I wasn’t hiding behind a weave to make me feel beauiful. I was beautiful because I was myself.
On another note. I love the big hair and styles being natural allows you to have. I personally don’t think that’s a good enough reason to go natural though. Especially if your hair is healthy and beautiful relaxed. There are plenty of big hair weaves out there. And honestly I disagree with the notion that one is fake or self hating if they don’t like their hair in its natural state. Or if they like their hair better with a weave. Weave like makeup is personal preference. Many times it serves to enhance one’s natural God given beauty. For instance clip ins or a sew in may add volume or length to hair and makeup may hide blemishes or bring out one’s beautiful oval shaped eyes for instance.
And Once again. Being natural is not for everybody. Being natural is a tedious process. It requires lots of patience and tender loving care and your hair may not grow much for quite a bit of time based on observations of 2+ year naturals and such. Too many girls rush into this natural thing…but its not all fun and games. It’s something to Really think about. It is also a great way to really learn about your hair. However you can do that relaxed. Many of the natural styles and conditioners and treatments you can still do/use relaxed. The only reason I would advise one to go natural is if one wants to completely start over and get their hair in a healthier state or for personal deep convictions…
But, really, at the end of the day what really matters is the realization that you are not your hair. Life is so much more than hair styles and the way you keep your hair. Now whether that liberates you to wear your hair in its natural state or liberates you to wear weaves with no mind to others’ opinions is your choice and your choice ALONE.
Loving yourself is key either way the wind blows. :)
